Newport Beach 4, Rancho Santa Margarita 2

Newport’s Chargers controlled the match from the start, opening the scoring early in the first quarter with a goal by Megan Daly off an assist by Kenya Avila. Kate McFetters scored an unassisted goal a short while later to open a comfortable lead. After Rancho Santa Margarita scored to close the gap, Daly answered with another score on an assist by Kaitlyn Mead. Avila closed the scoring with an assist by McFetters. Newport showed a balanced attack with superb midfield play from Abbey Pickett, Christina Arechiga and Kathryn DelaTorre. Newport’s defense was anchored by Emily Cook, Jenna Nulty, McKenna Johnson and Berkley VanOostendorp. Kristen Kiehnle played a solid game from her forward position as did Bailey Reike in goal and on defense.

Newport Beach 3, Huntington Beach 1

Although they dominated play in the first half, Newport led only 1-0 at the half. The goal came on a shot by Christina Arechiga with an assist by McKenna Johnson. Kathryn DelaTorre gave the Chargers some breathing room early in the third quarter with her unassisted goal. After Huntington tallied their lone goal in the fourth quarter to get within one, Kate McFetters scored the clincher off a picture perfect cross pass from Kristen Kiehnle. Newport’s defense was stifling with strong play from Jenna Nulty, Berkley VanOostendorp and Emily Cook. Katelyn Mead and Abbey Pickett controlled play in the middle of the field. Kenya Avila and Megan Daly kept constant pressure on the Huntington Beach goal with some excellent passing at their forward positions. Bailey Reike was near perfect in goal, allowing only the one tally on a collision with an attacker in the goal area.
