Asics/UCI Invitational

IRVINE — The UC Irvine women’s cross country team, led by senior Laura Olvera’s first-place finish, won the title of the Asics/UCI Invitational for the second straight year at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields Saturday.

UCI, in its season opener, finished with 51 points, followed by UCLA (84) and Loyola Marymount (109) in the 14-team race.

Olvera covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 24 seconds. Senior teammate Candice Chavez placed third in 17:43.80 as Tara Erdmann of Loyola Marymount was second in 17:36.60.

A trio of seniors rounded out UCI’s top five as Samantha Costantini was sixth (17:53.90), Erinn Kim 19th (18:37.60) and Lauren Chramosta 22nd (18:42.20).

Sophomore Katherine Nielsen placed 24th (18:44.50), senior Kendall Bruton was 37th (19:00.80), junior Emily Romo 42nd (19:04.60) and senior Megan Fairley 46th (19:07.50) in the 155-runner field.

Senior Nick Mosey and junior Colin Hacker of UCI finished 1-2 in the men’s race. Mosey recorded a time of 25:14.30 and Hacker 25:21.50 over the 8,000-meter course.

Senior Rusty Whisman placed 12th in 25:53.90, freshman Rex Nelson was 19th (26:07.50), and freshmen Chris Proffitt (26:37.90) and Danny Kalinowski (26:40.80) were 35th and 36th, respectively.

Senior Solomon Tesfaye finished 50th in 27:11.90, freshman Nick Osborne was 54th (27:16.40) and sophomore Victor Bonilla 57th (27:23.00) in the 135-runner field.

UCLA won the men’s team title with 29 points, UCI was second with 61 and Cal Poly third with 70.

COSTA MESA — Freshman outside hitter Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product had six of her career-high 13 kills in the third set to help the host Lions claim the nonconference clash, 25-21, 25-18, 25-11, Saturday.

Junior outside hitter Kelsey Wirt and junior middle blocker Jessica Roy, an Orange Coast College transfer, both added 11 kills for the winners (5-0), ranked No. 21 in the NAIA preseason poll.

Junior setter Megan Walsh had 30 assists and sophomore Alexandra Griffiths led the Lions with seven digs and six service aces.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Sophomore outside hitter Larissa Nordyke and senior Shannan Homan had a career-high 16 and 15 kills, respectively, in a 25-17, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21 loss to the Sun Devils Saturday to conclude the Nike Portland Invitational at the University of Portland.

Senior Lauren Kellerman and sophomore Kari Pestolesi added 10 kills apiece for the Anteaters (3-3).

Junior setter Taryn Robertson had 52 assists and five total blocks, while senior libero Devon Sutherland topped all players with 22 digs.

Nordyke added 15 digs, while Pestolesi also produced 13 digs and four block assists.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 4, Occidental 0

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Danielle Dintino scored three goals and had an assist to lead the Lions to the nonconference shutout at Vanguard Saturday.

Sophomore Karri Currier scored within the first two minutes, off Dintino’s assist. Dintino then struck for her hat trick. Junior goalie Jillian Foss finished with three saves for the Lions (3-0).
