SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor High product April Ross and partner Jen Boss stunned two-time Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor, another former Newport Harbor star, and Kerri Ross, knocking off the No. 1-seeded tandem, 21-18, 15-21, 20-18, in the semifinals of the women’s Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Cup Shootout Sunday at West Beach.

Ross and Boss lost in the final, 21-16, 24-22, to Jenny Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis later Sunday.

But the upset over the No. 1 team in the world helped Ross-Boss deny May-Treanor and Walsh a trip to the final at an AVP event since April of 2007.

Costa Mesa resident and Olympian Jake Gibb, partnered with Sean Rosenthal, tied for third in the men’s event. They shared $10,500.

Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer and partner Casey Jennings, as well as Newport Harbor High product Ty Tramblie and partner Mike Morrison, shared 13th place in the men’s event, won by Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.
