Breakdown: The Pirates scored all their points in the second half in a 27-3 nonconference win over Santa Monica last week and Coach Mike Taylor wants a better start than the one that produced no points in the first two periods ... L.A. Southwest, which had a 36-yard field-goal try blocked and missed a 27-yard attempt, is still waiting for its first points after collecting just 134 yards of total offense in a 27-0 loss to El Camino, then ranked No. 5 in the state ... Hughes, a Corona del Mar High product, starts in place of Sean Reilly, after replacing Reilly, a freshman, in the second half last week ... Hughes completed his final six passes after an opening misfire and finished with 95 yards passing and one touchdown pass ... The Cougars’ offensive struggles figure to continue against an OCC defense that surrendered no touchdowns and just 223 yards against Santa Monica ... Soza and Baichtal, both all-division performers as freshmen, each had interceptions last week and Baichtal returned his 60 yards for a TD. Baichtal now has seven career interceptions and Soza has five ... Sophomore tailback Kevin Ah-Hi leads the Pirates’ ground game. He rushed for 78 yards on 18 carries in the opener and needs 120 yards to hit the 1,000-yard plateau for his OCC career ... OCC is listed among others receiving votes in the coaches’ state top-25 poll and a big victory could propel it into the top 25 ... Harkness led the Cougars in total offense in 2007, when they were 4-6. He amassed 1,161 of his 1,393 total yards last season by passing.
