May-Treanor meets up against Ross once again

SAN FRANCISCO — Former Newport Harbor High stars will clash once again today in the semifinals of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Tour San Francisco event.

This time Misty May-Treanor will be seeking revenge against April Ross. Last week, Ross and her partner Jennifer Boss beat May-Treanor and Walsh, the two-time Olympic gold medal winning duo, in the semifinals of the AVP Crocs Shootout in Santa Barbara.

Ross and Boss, the No. 2 seeds, bounced back from a loss in the third round to advance to the semifinals. They fell to Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs, the third seeds, 21-11, 21-19. But in the contender’s bracket third round, Ross and Boss took out fifth-seeded duo of Angie Akers and Holly McPeak, 21-11, 21-14.

May-Treanor and Walsh, the top-seeded tandem, defeated Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, the No. 4 seeds, in the third round, 21-17, 21-16.

Davis and Johnson Jordan take on Branagh and Youngs in the other semifinal today.

On the men’s side, Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal are on course for a matchup against Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.

Gibb and Rosenthal, the No. 3 seeds, will face the fourth-seeded team of John Hyden and Brad Keenan in a semifinal, while Dalhausser and Rogers will take on Stein Metzger and Mark Williams, the No. 5 seeds, in the other.

With a 21-19, 21-19 win over No. 2 seeds Nick Lucena and Sean Scott, Gibb and Rosenthal advanced to the semifinals.
