Local Judges at the OC Innovations Awards

Newport Beach residents Michael McCarthy and Walter Schindler are among a panel of Orange County’s brightest “green” minds brought together by Toshiba to judge its second-annual Toshiba Green Innovations Awards on Oct. 1, 2008.

The press release below features more information on the awards, for which the submission deadline has been newly extended to Sept. 19, 2008.

Here’s a little more information about Michael McCarthy and Walter Schindler:

Michael McCarthy, President & CEO, Hobbs Institute (Chapman University)

Michael M. McCarthy is director of The Roger C. Hobbs Institute for Real Estate, Law and Environmental Studies at Chapman University in Orange, Calif. The Institute provides a focal point and serves as a catalyst for interdisciplinary educational programs and activities about development that encourage maximum sustainable economic growth concurrent with a net gain in environmental and social conditions.

McCarthy consults, lectures, writes and leads international expeditions about market-based strategies that result in environmentally and socially sensitive business practices that are profitable, not prohibitive — Green Both Ways™. He also holds continuing adjunct professor appointments at The Institute for Interactive Arts and Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas and with The Centre for Ecological Economics and Water Policy Research at the University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales.

A full member of the Urban Land Institute, McCarthy is the author of nearly 100 publications and has lectured around the world, from being an invited speaker at the First International Congress of Ecology in The Hague, Netherlands, more than 30 years ago. More recently, he was asked by Queensland Premier Peter Beattie to be the Keynote Speaker at the Summit on Sustainability in Australia, where a significant part of his professional work has been for 24 years.

McCarthy received an interdisciplinary doctoral degree in environmental studies and Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in landscape architecture from University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1982 he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Department of Landscape Architecture at UW.

Walter Schindler, Managing Partner, SAIL Venture Partners, LLC

Walter Schindler is managing partner of SAIL Venture Partners, LLC, one of the pioneers and leaders of “green” investing in the U.S. SAIL invests in emerging companies with breakthrough technologies affecting large global markets, primarily energy, water and agriculture. Schindler has also served as the chairman and CEO of a SAIL portfolio company and led it from pre-revenue research and development into successful commercialization, achieving $13 million of revenues in its first year of operations.

Prior to SAIL, Schindler was the managing partner of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s Orange County office. In that role he was the trusted strategic advisor to leading Southern California-based companies, including Allergan, First American, Pacific Mutual Life Insurance, PIMCO, RemedyTemp and SafeGuard. He was the lead strategic advisor in more than 60 mergers, acquisitions or IPOs.

Schindler has been a member of the board of trustees of several charitable foundations and organizations, including the American Cancer Society and St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. He was selected by his peers as one of the five best corporate lawyers in Orange County in an independent survey of members of the bar.

Schindler earned a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, graduating magna cum laude and receiving the Chauncey Brewster Tinker Prize and the Bates Traveling Fellowship. After college he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Italy and translate Italian poetry into English. He then earned a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in English literature from Yale University, completing the program in a record two years and winning the Mary Cady Tew Prize (First in Class). Schindler graduated cum laude with his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.

TOSHIBA AND ORANGE COUNTY INNOVATION ANNOUNCE JUDGES FOR TOSHIBA GREEN INNOVATION AWARD

Panel Selected to Judge Second Annual Award Recognizing Green Values: Deadline Extended Until Sept. 19th

IRVINE, Calif. -- Sept. 10, 2008 -- Toshiba’s https://www.explore.toshiba.com/” href=”https://www.explore.toshiba.com/”>Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., and https://ocinnovation2008.com/” href=”https://ocinnovation2008.com/”>Orange County Innovation (OCI) today announced the names of the distinguished panel ofjudges who will evaluate the submitted entries for the second annual Toshiba Green Innovation Award. The deadline date for entry has now been extended until Sept. 19, 2008. Winners will be announced in conjunction with the https://ocinnovation2008.com/” href=”https://ocinnovation2008.com/”>Innovation and Globalization in Green conference on Oct. 1, 2008.

The annual contest awards prizes for the best “green” products, services, technologies, processes, programs or activities from Orange County, Calif., businesses, educators, institutions and organizations. Judges will decide which submissions for the Toshiba Green Innovation Award will become finalists by ranking them in two categories: environmental value and degree of innovation.

The judges were chosen based on their range of backgrounds, which includes business, art, academia and the environment. One such judge is Steven Ryan, program manager for https://www.energystar.gov/” href=”https://www.energystar.gov/”>Energy Star, https://www.epa.gov/” href=”https://www.epa.gov/”>U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“It is a pleasure to be part of the judging panel on the Toshiba Green Innovation Award,” Ryan said. “The award is a shining example of how larger companies can encourage and reward environmental activity within their own communities.”

The winner will receive $5,000 and a Toshiba laptop PC. Second- and third-prize winners will receive $3,000 and $1,000, respectively, as well as a Toshiba laptop PC. There will also be a live audience vote at the conference that will award another Toshiba laptop PC to the “people’s choice” winner.
