UCI winners on pitch

CEDAR CITY, Utah — The UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated Southern Utah, 2-0, in non-conference road game Monday.

Sophomore Milana Shabestari opened the scoring in the 21st minute and sophomore Tanya Taylor finalized things in the 48th minute, blasting one in from 12 yards out on a carom from a corner kick.

Sophomore Danielle de Seriere (two saves), senior Erin Henry (one) and freshman Erica Quevedo (one) combined to post the shutout for UCI (3-4).

Southern Utah fell to 0-5.

 In men’s soccer action Sunday, UCI defeated Memphis, 3-1, in its final game of the UAB tournament in Birmingham, Ala. UCI finished second in the event.

UCI senior Matt Murphy one-timed a pass from Spencer Thompson to break a 1-1 tie in the 35th minute.

Murphy added an assist on junior Kevin Santora’s goal and Thompson had an assist on sophomore Amani Walker’s goal for the Anteaters (4-0-2).

Thompson, Irving Garcia, Kyle Schmid and David Sias were named all-tournament.

Freshman Andrew Fontein had three saves for UCI.

Memphis is now 1-5.
