Locals advance on beach
MANHATTAN BEACH — Several local players advanced through the open qualifying event at the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open Thursday near the Manhattan Beach Pier.
Matt Fuerbringer, an Estancia High product, teamed with Casey Jennings to advance to main draw.
Others locals advancing in the men’s event were Newport Harbor High product Ty Tramblie with partner Mike Morrison, Newport Beach resident Jason Ring and partner Fred Souza, Costa Mesa residents Hans Stolfus (with Matt Prosser) and Russ Marchenka (with Mike Placek).
Former UC Irvine women’s player Whitney Pavlik advanced to the main draw with partner Stacey Rouwenhorst.
The event, where both the winning men’s and women’s teams will split $100,000, begins today at 9 a.m.
Misty May-Treanor, a Newport Harbor product, and Kerri Walsh are the top-seeded team in the women’s event.
The women’s final is scheduled Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The men’s final is slated for Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Van’t Hof in quarterfinals
COSTA MESA — Newport Beach resident Kaes Van’t Hof has advanced to today’s quarterfinals at the Costa Mesa Pro Futures Classic tennis tournament held at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
Van’t Hof defeated Jonathan Kinsella of Great Britain, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round to set up a quarterfinal date against Tobias Clemens of Germany today at approximately noon, based on the completion of previous matches.
