Seahawks can’t finish

HUNTINGTON BEACH — It didn’t amount to victory, but Harold Eggers was pleased with the effort his Ocean View Seahawks came up with against University.

Ocean View shut down a mobile University offense in the first half of Friday’s nonleague football game at Ocean View but did give up a pair of second half touchdowns that allowed the Trojans to leave with a 14-7 victory.

University scored on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter and then turned away the Seahawks twice in Trojans territory in the fourth quarter.

“I saw a lot of positives out there tonight and I thought we improved a lot from last week,” said Eggers whose team beat Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana, 15-14, on Sept. 11. “Our defense was more disciplined and our offense was much better with its passing attack. There was no where to go but up passing-wise from last week.”

Ocean View’s defense came up with a big stop in the first quarter after the Trojans took advantage of a Kyle Walker fumble at the University 44-yard line and marched down for a first-and-goal at the nine. But three plays netted only six yards and a fourth-down pass from Elliott Martin to Omar Cook was stopped at the two and Ocean View took over on downs.

The Seahawks scored the only touchdown of the first half at the 2:43 mark when sophomore quarterback Nolan Tippy hit senior receiver Adam To 10 yards up field at the University 25 and To then eluded a tackle and sprinted to the end zone. Fernando Valdez’s conversion gave Ocean View a 7-0 lead at the half.

Walker gave the Seahawks added momentum by returning the second half kickoff 35 yards to the 45 but three plays later, a Tippy pass intended for Kenny Tarpley was intercepted by Erik Ogunsanya at the Trojans 43. After moving 39 yards in seven plays, University faced fourth-and-three from the Ocean View 18 where Cook took a pitch for eight yards down to the 10. Tyler Fletcher, one of two deaf players on the University roster, scored on a six-yard run to tie it up, 7-7, with 5:25 left in the third quarter.

The Trojans gained added momentum on the ensuing kickoff when Sean Donovan recovered a fumble on the return by the Seahawks’ Blake Walker. Four plays later, on a fourth-and-two at the 19, Martin, who threw for 202 yards, found Ogunsanya over the middle on a a 19-yard scoring pass. Kiran Luecke’s kick gave the Trojans a 14-7 lead with 3:16 left in the quarter.

Ocean View reached the University 46-yard line on its first possession of the fourth quarter but a Tippy pass was intercepted by Ashkun Alvandi at the 37. Johnson Anwell gave the Seahawks the ball back at their own 33 when he intercepted a Martin pass and Ocean View moved the ball out to the University 46. But the drive stalled when on fourth-and-four, a short pass from tippy to Anwell was a half-yard short and Ocean View turned the ball over on downs with 4:55 to play.

Tippy, in only his second start at quarterback, threw for 193 yards. To had 79 yards receiving and Tarpley led all Seahawks receivers with 82 yards.

“Nolan threw the ball a lot better than last week against Calvary,” Eggers said. “He took some licks but he got up and fought. I was really impressed with his mental toughness.

“University’s a good football team and our kids fought them to the end. I’m proud of our effort.”

Ocean View returns to play Sept. 27 when the Seahawks play Northwood at Irvine High.
