One trip to San Clemente.

Another trip to Corona del Mar.

In my case, there were no girls’ matches to cover Tuesday.

Tennis or volleyball.

Sage Hill School’s big tennis match against rival St. Margaret’s, the top two ranked teams in the CIF Southern Section Division IV coaches’ poll, was rescheduled.

So was Corona del Mar High’s volleyball match against Dana Hills.

The reason?

“Rosh Hashana,” said St. Margaret’s Coach Rick Trager after getting off the bus at Rancho San Clemente Tennis and Fitness Club.

“Rosh Hashana,” said CdM Coach Darryl Gan with his players nearby.

Each of the programs decided to practice on the start of the Jewish New Year.

RADEVA MAKES NEWPORT DEBUT

For the first time this season, senior Nelly Radeva played for the Newport Harbor’s girls’ tennis team and the Sailors pulled off an upset.

Newport Harbor beat visiting Troy, 13-5, in a nonleague match Tuesday. Troy is ranked No. 10 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll.

“It was nice to get her,” said Newport Harbor Coach Kristen Case, adding that Radeva has verbally committed to UC Berkeley. “She’s been away, recently in Bulgaria, playing in tournaments.”

Radeva played No. 2 singles, beating Troy’s top two singles players.

The Sailors continued to get strong play from senior Natalie Small and Jeanne Frei in No. 1 doubles. They swept the competition Tuesday and are now 24-5 together.

Next is the Sunset League opener at Fountain Valley Thursday at 3 p.m.

“League will be between us, Esperanza and Los [Alamitos],” said Case, who’s in her second year at Newport Harbor.

EAGLES OFF TO HOT START

This is the best start for the Estancia High girls’ volleyball program in Jim Huffman’s six years as coach.

The Eagles improved to 9-1 after defeating La Habra, 25-20, 25-16, 25-19, in a nonleague match Tuesday.

“We’re clicking,” said Huffman, whose team has won five straight matches. “Annie Tomasek and Shona Lamb have played really well.”

The two are key reasons why the Eagles are 31-5 in games.

Tomasek is averaging five kills per game and Lamb 9.8 assists per game.

“We have Irvine at home Thursday and we’ve lost to Irvine the last two years,” Huffman said. “We are do for a win against Irvine.”

RANKINGS

Corona del Mar is the lone Newport-Mesa football program ranked in one of the CIF Southern Section football polls. The Sea Kings (3-1) are No. 6 in the Southern Division coaches’ poll.

In girls’ volleyball, CdM (7-3) is No. 2 in Division II-AA, Newport Harbor (8-1) is No. 5 in Division I-AA, and Sage Hill (5-8) is No. 8 in Division IV-AA.

In girls’ tennis, CdM (5-0) is No. 2 in Division I and Sage Hill (6-1) is No. 2 in Division IV.
