Vikings look to keep winning ways

They’ve got that first win. Now, the Marina Vikings want more.

Fresh off a trophy-clinching victory over Huntington Beach, Marina returns to action tonight trying to add another victory under its belt. The Vikings will attempt to do just that when they take on the Orange Panthers at El Modena High in Orange. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Fred Kelly Stadium.

Marina took home the perpetual trophy that goes to the winner of the Marina-Huntington Beach football game Sept. 25, which the Vikings hung on to win, 21-14, at Orange Coast College.

Marina bolted to a two-touchdown lead on the Oilers by the half, increased the advantage to 21 points in the third quarter but then watched Huntington storm back only to fall a yard shy of keeping alive a potential score-tying drive late in the game.

Marina now leads a series that dates to 1965, 28-13-1.

Huntington has held the trophy since winning the 2005 game, 14-7.

“It feels really good to get that first win,” Marina Coach Dan Petrone said. “Hopefully, this will give us some momentum for the rest of the season.”

Sam Wilson was the workhorse for Marina in the win over Huntington. The senior running back rushed for both first-half touchdowns for the Vikings. Wilson also scored the final Marina touchdown on an eight-yard run in the third quarter. He rambled for 230 yards for the game, 156 of which came in the first half.

Orange limps into the game at 0-3. The Panthers have struggled on offense, scoring a combined 34 points. Defensively, the Panthers yield an average of 35 points a game.

Westminster (1-2) vs. Huntington Beach (1-2) at Ocean View High, 5 p.m.: Huntington Beach will try to regroup Saturday when it takes on Westminster in an early kickoff time.

The game marks the second time in three weeks that Westminster will play at Ocean View Stadium.

The Oilers lost last week to Marina, 21-14, rallying from a 21-point deficit only to come up short. Sean Guite hit Derrick Romo with a short pass and Romo turned it into a 65-yard scoring play for the Oilers first touchdown.

The Oilers used a bit of trickery on the ensuing kickoff, a successful onside kick that was recovered at the Marina 48-yard line by Dylan Simmons. Eleven plays later, running back Kendall Ivey stumbled into the end zone from a yard out with 1:33 to play in the third quarter.

Huntington drove deep into Marina territory late in the game but failed on a fourth-and-one run from the four-yard line with 3:35 left in the game.

“We’re a competitive group and never out of any game,” Huntington Coach Eric Lo said. “We played a great second half, but we’re just disappointed that we couldn’t finish the comeback.”

Westminster was walloped, 52-7, last week by La Habra, one week after the Lions rallied past the same Marina team that defeated Huntington on Sept. 25. The Lions, who began the season ranked second and currently are No. 8 in this week’s Southern Division poll, trailed the Highlanders, ranked No. 1 in the Southwest Division, 35-0, at the half and 52-0, before Louie Villa scored on a 12-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Westminster also trailed Marina, 21-7, at the half before rallying in the second half to beat the Vikings, 35-28.
