Chin, UCI hot in win

SAN LUIS OBISPO — With all five players finishing in the top 10, the UC Irvine women’s golf team cruised to a 47-shot victory at the Coast BMW Intercollegiate at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course Tuesday.

As a team, UCI shot a 298 Tuesday to finish with a three-round total of 909 (306-305-298), 47 shots ahead of host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (956).

It is the first tournament title of the year for the Anteaters and the 14th in program history. The 47-stroke advantage is the program’s best margin of victory, surpassing the 2006 team that won the 2006 Big West Championships by 43 strokes.

Senior Jane Chin earned medalist honors with a 54-hole total of three-over-par 216 (72-73-71). Chin, who is coming off a second-place performance in the first tournament of the year, becomes the sixth player to win a tournament for UCI. Chin’s 71 on the final round was the only even par performance of the tournament.

Freshman Joy Trotter finished second, her first collegiate top-10 showing after carding a 228 (77-77-74). Sophomore Hillary Packard finished in a tie for third with a score of 235 (79-78-78), her best collegiate finish. Junior Patty Chawalitmetha was tied for fifth with a 236 (78-77-81. Freshman Lalita Patipaksiri shot a 75 on the final 18 and rounded out the Anteater lineup with a score of 240 (83-82-75) and a 10th place finish.
