Huntington Beach High graduate Tony Gonzalez set the NFL career mark for receiving yards for a tight end Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs lost, 34-0, to the Carolina Panthers.

Gonzalez had just three receptions for 17 yards, but he needed only three yards entering Sunday’s game to surpass Shannon Sharpe’s record of 10,060 yards. He set the new mark when he took in a six-yard pass from Damon Huard in the first quarter.

Gonzalez, a nine-time Pro Bowler, has caught at least one pass in 120 consecutive games. He now has 10,075 receiving yards in his 12-year career. He also holds tight end records for career receptions (841) and touchdowns (68).
