Activist to discuss carbon dioxide emissions at event

Environmental author and activist Bill McKibben will be the keynote speaker at the 11th annual Caring for Creation Conference Oct. 25 at St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach.

The conference is sponsored by the Orange County Interfaith Coalition for the Environment. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the conference will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

McKibben will talk about the significance of the number 350 in his keynote address, “Why Ringing the Church Bells 350 Times Might Save the World.” The most recent scientific consensus warns that humans must reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million.

McKibben wrote several acclaimed books, including The End of Nature and Deep Economy: the Wealth of Communities & the Durable Future, and was the organizer of the StepItUp campaign last year culminating in the largest demonstrations against global warming in U.S. history.
