Kirby Burnham, a Newport Harbor High junior, has verbally committed to play volleyball for USC, Sailors Coach Dan Glenn said.

Burnham, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, is one of the key players for Newport Harbor, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA.

During the summer, Burnham helped lead the Orange County Volleyball Club 16-year-old girls’ team capture the Volleyball Festival championship. The team went undefeated in the 10 matches it played in the division that had 181 teams.

Burnham also excels in track and field. Last spring, she finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (16.61 seconds) at the Sunset League finals and qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries.

Newport Harbor (14-4, 3-1 in league) will play at Fountain Valley on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
