COSTA MESA — Coach Chuck Cutenese earned his 500th win as his Pirates swept, 25-13, 25-15, 25-9, in Orange Empire Conference action Friday.

Cutenese is now 266-108 in his 17th season as coach of the women’s team. He was 234-70 as men’s coach, before stepping down to lessen his coaching load.

Rachel Freeno, Kari-Ann Hyatt, Briana Fields and Jessica Bodkin each had four kills for the Pirates (12-1, 4-1 in conference).

Michelle Alvarez had eight digs and Emily Lyon had 16 assists.

Santa Ana fell to 0-9, 0-5.

LONG BEACH — UC Irvine junior John Chin finished tied for second individually to help UC Irvine finish second among 15 teams in the 54-hole event concluded Friday at Virginia Country Club.

Chin shot nine-under-par 204 for the tournament, eight shots behind winner Zahkai Brown of Colorado State.

UCI’s team score of 834 was 23 off the pace of victorious Colorado State, which finished 41 under par.

UCI freshman Roberto Francioni shot two-under 69 Friday to finish 11th overall (210) and senior Sean Shahi was 12th (211).

Senior Cean Hayashi Geronimo, who shot a team-best 68 Friday, was 15th (212) and freshman Michael Im was 38th (218) for UCI.

IRVINE — Sophomore Milana Shabestari scored in the 55th minute, but the Anteaters could not hold on to the lead in a Big West Conference match Friday night at Anteater Stadium.

UCI (7-7-1, 1-2-1 in conference) took a 1-0 lead as sophomore Tanya Taylor crossed the ball from the left side of the box to the right, where she found Shabestari, who knocked it past the keeper.

The Titans tied the match, 1-1, as Janae Deas blasted the ball from 40 yards out that was deflected inside the box and just over the fingers of the keeper in the 76th minute.

In the 78th minute, the Titans capitalized on a loose ball in the box that was knocked in by Christina Murillo to break the deadlock.

Erica Quevedo had two saves to go along with the team save by Busby for the ’Eaters.

Shannon Simpson had three saves for the Titans.
