NEWPORT BEACH — In the pool and with a yellow ball, Kaleigh Gilchrist is considered among the elite in the county for girls’ water polo. In the ocean water and with a surfboard, the Newport Harbor High junior is not so bad there either.

Newport Harbor, last year’s co-champion of the South Coast League, is 2-0 in league. The Sailors beat Laguna Beach, 101-67, last weeek.

COSTA MESA — Mustangs Coach Justin Taylor said the Costa Mesa footbal team’s support helped his players pull out a big Academy League win Wednesday.

With the football players cheering for them, the Mustangs outscored the Lightning, 3-0, in the fourth quarter to grab the win and clinch a CIF Southern Section playoff berth.

“The football team showed up in the fourth quarter and they were chanting, “Defense,” and other [encouraging words],” Taylor said. “I think that provided an emotional lift for us.”

Cody Serrano led Costa Mesa (13-5, 3-0 in league) with a game-high four goals, while his twin brother Dustin Serrano added three.

It was the first time Mesa beat Sage Hill in league play.
