A four-point deficit in the final 25 seconds didn’t stop Golden West from scoring an improbable American Mountain Conference victory Saturday over San Diego Mesa.

After the Olympians’ Braxton Welford scored on a three-yard run and Stanley Shurson provided the extra point to give Mesa a 34-30 lead with just 25 seconds left in the game at Orange Coast College, Golden West’s Brandon Grissom returned the ensuing kickoff 28 yards to the Mesa 47-yard line. The Olympians also were hit with a face mask penalty on the play and Rustlers had a first down at the 32. Four plays later, quarterback Mica Vanderipe connected with Lavasier Tuinei for an 18-yard gain down to the two-yard line, and on the next play, Fountain Valley High grad Bryce Blake scored on a two-yard pass to give the Rustlers a 36-34 victory.

Blake had two touchdown receptions on the night and Vanderipe and Mike Manuel, who rushed for 106 yards on 29 carries, both scored once.

Golden West returns to conference play Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Compton. The Rustlers currently are 2-1 in the conference.
