Money rolls in for former city clerk

Former City Clerk Verna Rollinger continues to amass the biggest war chest, according to candidates’ disclosure statements filed Thursday.

Rollinger added $4,838 to her coffers in the 18 days since the previous filing deadline, when she reported monetary donations of $29,129 and nonmonetary donations of $7,519, which included contributions to a fundraising auction.

Rollinger’s treasurer, Bill Rihn, reported total expenditures of $29,836, including $7,519, the same amount reported as nonmonetary contributions.

Incumbent Mayor Jane Egly added $11,482.11 to her previous monetary contributions, bringing the total take in the calendar year to $25,250.11.

Egly has the most money left to spend, $16,263.79 after expenditures to date of $8,996.32.

Nancy Joseph is the treasurer for the Egly for City Council Committee.

Friends of Cheryl Kinsman Committee treasurer Michael Kinsman reported monetary contributions of $9,407 between Oct. 1 and Saturday, approximately 50% more than the candidate’s previous total.

Kinsman has spent $20,282.09, leaving a balance, as of Thursday’s filing, of $9,428.98.

None of the three candidates agreed to restrict their spending to Laguna’s voluntary limit of $15,000, an amount deemed so low as to be useless, if not ridiculous.

Error of omission

A reference in the Oct. 17 story on contributions inadvertently led some readers to conclude that Linda Brown was involved in the preparation of the Rollinger committee’s disclosure statement. Brown’s contribution was listed three times, reported as a clerical error, which was ironic because Brown was meticulous in reviewing the 2006 statements for errors.

Unfortunately, the word “ironic” was omitted. Our apologies.

Independent expenditures

The Laguna Beach Taxpayers Assn. reported total monetary contributions of $2,889 as of Saturday and expenditures of $335.74 for a mailer on behalf of Kinsman.

Village Laguna had reported monetary contributions of $5,856 through Sept. 30 and total expenditures of $845, split between Rollinger and Egly, who were both endorsed by the group.

The disclosure statement for Oct. 1 to Saturday had not been filed by the Coastline Pilot deadline, but was not overdue.

Rollinger fundraiser

Jon Madison will host a reception for Rollinger at Madison Square and Garden from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The suggested donation is $25. Rollinger will discuss her reasons for running again and her issues.

Dancing in the streets

Lisa R. Pettigrew and the Laguna Beach Democratic Headquarters are inviting the public to join a procession Saturday, based on dance pioneer Anna Halprin’s famous work, The Blank Placard Dance.

Participants in the procession will carry blank signs, as a statement of support for the Obama/Biden ticket.

The procession will begin and end at 1401 S. Coast Hwy.

Pettigrew estimates the event will last about two hours. Walkers are advised to wear a white top and comfortable shoes and bring water and a 17-inch-wide by 22-inch-high black placard with a stick attached to the headquarters at 2:30 p.m. The procession will start at 3 p.m.

No previous performance or dance experience is required. For more information, visit www.lisapettigrew.org.

No on 8 fundraiser

The Boom Boom Room is “rising from the dead to kill Proposition 8,” according to Fred Karger.

A fundraiser billed as a Halloween extravaganza will be from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday at what is now the local Democratic Party headquarters.

Donations of $10 will be used to help defeat the proposition, which would stipulate that only marriage between and a woman would be legal in California.
