Two dachshunds sandwiched between fabric buns and drizzled with fake mustard were transformed into a pair of hot dogs and an English bulldog became a hula dancer complete with lei and grass skirt at Barney’s Barkery on Balboa Island Saturday.

The upscale pet boutique hosted a Halloween costume contest for dogs that attracted furry, four-legged witches, pirates and princesses.

“He loves dressing up, so we though we’d do this for the fun of it,” said dog owner Lucy Mendicina, who dressed up her Wheaten terrier named Rocco as a devil complete with horns for the contest.

Michele McKay, who runs the pet rescue organization OCPoundHounds dressed up an 8-month-old Chinese crested and terrier mix named Dougal she rescued as a rebellious rock star with a purple mohawk, studded arm cuffs and leather jacket for the contest.

“I got the idea from his favorite toy and went from there,” McKay said.

The toy, a stuffed, Union Jack-patterned guitar bearing the phrase “Rock on,” was strapped to Dougal’s back to complete the look.

The dressed-up dogs competed for an 8-by-10 framed water color portrait of the winning dog by artist Dick Jacobson.
