WALNUT — Newport Harbor High seniors Desiree Alexander and Erica Pearson finished 1-2 in the Division II race and led the Sailors to the championship Saturday.

Alexander finished in 18 minutes, 38 seconds and Pearson was right behind her at 18:39. Sophomore Tori Sarris was sixth in 19:02, junior Ava Nelson was 13th in 19:30 and freshman Lauren Clemence finished 38th in 20:25 to help Newport Harbor score 56 points. Canyon was second with 84 and Thousand Oaks third with 104.

Junior Patty Moddelmog finished 46th in 20:40 and junior Kasey DeYoung was 62nd in 21:08 for the Sailors.

On the boys’ side, Newport Harbor finished 13th in the Division II race. Senior Michel Taylor led the Sailors, finishing 29th in 16:07. Senior Jake Dawson (36th in 16:12), senior Scott Figueroa (90th in 16:50), junior Jake Manning (95th in 16:53) and senior Saul Delarosa (111th in 17:03) also scored for Newport Harbor. Also competing for the Sailors were seniors Eddie Garcia (126th in 17:14) and Trent Casillas (147th in 17:34).

SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor finished seventh after beating Redondo Union, 25-23, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19, Saturday at Santa Barbara High.

Mary Buckingham, Kirby Burnham and Katey Thompson recorded 15 kills each, while Jennifer Palmquist added four kills and five blocks for the Sailors (17-7), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA.

Thompson and Mackenzi Campbell had three aces each, and Kelly Heenan had 12 digs.

The Sailors played for seventh place after losing to Santa Barbara Saturday morning. The Dons won, 25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 25-16. Burnham led with 10 kills, while Katie Lawler had seven and two aces. Thompson had four aces and Arielle Lysacek finished with 23 assists and two blocks.

Newport Harbor also split its matches on Friday. The Sailors lost to Mira Costa, 19-25, 23-25, 20-25, late Friday night. Thompson led with 14 kills. Buckingham and Burnham added six kills each, while Alice Cope had six blocks and four kills. Palmquist finished with five kills and two blocks and Campbell had three aces.

The Sailors opened the tournament with a 25-10, 20-25, 25-22, 28-26 win over Buchanan of Clovis Friday. Burnham led with 12 kills and three ace serves.
