The following community-wide focus group meeting dates have been set to continue dialogue about the proposed magnet school options at Davis School. All focus group meetings will be held at Davis School. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

November 10, 7:00 p.m.

November 12, 1:30 p.m.

Background:

A parent survey was conducted by The Center for Community Opinion during the month of September to seek input regarding several options for a magnet school program to be housed at the Davis Education Center with a planned opening date of September 2009. Over 400 Newport-Mesa families were included in the phone survey.

To date, the Board of Education has held two study sessions to review the survey data and discuss further planning. The Board met on October 14, 2008 and October 21, 2008. At the study session on October 21, the Board received a presentation from staff regarding options to combine some of the program themes and options identified in the survey. The Board agreed with the grouping of the themes and options and provided some additional suggestions for inclusion in the two themes, including some components from the Back to Basics model and Language Immersion concepts. The two agreed upon theme options are: Science/Technology/Math and Creative Arts/Visual Performing Arts. A copy of the survey results presented on October 14, as well as the PowerPoint presented on October 21, and additional background information is attached.
