NEWPORT BEACH — Seniors Nelly Radeva and Liz Kramer swept at Nos. 2 and 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Natalie Small and Jeanne Frei also swept to help the Sailors clinch the outright Sunset League championship Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Coach Kristin Case said it was the Sailors’ first league title since 2004 and the first since they rejoined the Sunset League in 2006.

“The tennis today was phenomenal,” Case said of the play of her team, which improved to 16-3, 9-0 in league.

Esperanza’s only two league losses have come against the Tars.

Case said she aligned Radeva and Kramer down one spot from their typical lineup position in order for Radeva to gain a warm-up set before taking on the Aztecs’ No. 1 singles player, Bianca Modoc.

TUSTIN — The Mustangs erased a 6-3 halftime deficit by holding the Tillers to one goal in the final two periods of the nonleague contest Thursday at Tustin High.

Senior Garrett Frazier, who missed the Mustangs’ Orange Coast League title showdown with Laguna Beach Wednesday due to illness, returned and proved invaluable for the Mustangs (17-7). His shot from 10 meters out ricocheted off the goalie’s shoulder and into the net to break a 7-7 tie with eight seconds left, Mesa Coach Justin Taylor said.

Senior Dustin Serrano led the winners with three goals, while junior goalie Jackson O’Connor had six saves. O’Connor also missed Wednesday’s 20-8 loss to Laguna Beach with a sprained ankle.

Joey Dinh scored the second of his two goals to pull the Mustangs even with about 2:30 left, Taylor said, and the defense continued to stand firm against the Tillers (16-9).
