Stylish arrival

The giant Christmas tree at Fashion Island arrived early Monday morning in the courtyard outside of Bloomingdale’s.

The 115-foot-tall white fir tree, carted down from Mount Shasta in Northern California, is virtually a taller twin of the 96-foot-tall white fir, also from Mount Shasta, that was lifted into place in Costa Mesa late last month. South Coast Plaza may have been first this year, but Fashion Island can boast that its tree is 20 feet taller.

The two trees’ lighting ceremonies are attended by thousands.

After arriving on a flatbed truck, workers hoisted the tree with a large crane and stood it in place. In the next few weeks, decorators will string the branches with 23,000 white lights and other ornaments.

The tree will be lit for the first time at 6 p.m. Nov. 21, with an encore performance at the same time the following day.

Students from the California Conservatory of the Arts will sing holiday songs to herald Santa’s arrival.
