Charity seeks volunteers

Share Our Selves held its third Open House Wednesday, drawing about 25 curious about the Costa Mesa nonprofit that offers a variety of services for the needy.

“Several said they want to volunteer now,” said Karen Harrington, the organization’s director of development.

That’s good news since volunteers are sorely needed at the nonprofit as it struggles to meet an escalating demand for help in the sputtering economy.

The top need is for drivers who can pick up groceries donated by several Newport-Mesa stores, Harrington said.

Volunteers who have a reliable car can more or less set their schedule, but they’re mostly needed in the morning and early afternoon to pick up the food.

“To make that program work the stores have to depend on us” to get the food, Harrington said.
