IRVINE — The Anteaters hit better than .400 in the final two sets for a 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 Big West Conference win Friday night at Crawford Court.

Alexandra Filkins registered her sixth consecutive week with a career high, putting away 13 kills for UCI (13-11, 8-3 in conference). The outside hitter had just three errors in 25 attempts for a .400 average. Kari Pestolesi tied for the match-high with 16 kills and picked up 14 digs while Lauren Kellerman pounded 13 kills and fired a service winner. Devon Sutherland led all players with 20 digs. Middle blocker Alexandra Hauser hit .455, connecting on six of 11 attempts with one miscue and setter Taryn Robertson dealt out 50 assists while topping UCI with four total blocks.

The Aggies dropped to 11-14, 3-9.

IRVINE — Rachel Freeno led the Pirates with 16 kills and 14 digs against the Lasers, who won, 21,24-, 26-24, 25-23, 25-27, 15-6 Friday night in Orange Empire Conference action.

Briana Fields added 15 kills for OCC (15-4, 7-4 in conference), Christian Richards had 14 and Jessica Bodkin 10. Amanda Cheseborough had 22 digs and Jena Curry 14. Emily Lyon amassed 59 assists.

SANTA BARBARA — Freshman Chelsea Alfafara scored 14 points to lead the Pirates in their season-opener at the Santa Barbara tournament Friday night.

Freshman Michelle Lewis scored 11 points and sophomore Simone Ibbotson added eight for OCC, which will play against Santa Barbara tonight at 6 in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament.

STANFORD — Rachel Copeland scored 19 points to lead the Lions against the No. 2-ranked Cardinal Friday night at Maples Pavilion.

Lauren Gregory added eight points for Vanguard, the defending NAIA national champion.

Jayne Appel led four Stanford players scoring in double figures with 20 points.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UCLA 12, UC Irvine 10

LOS ANGELES — Juniors Greg Enloe and Thomas Kruip scored three goals each for the No. 9-ranked Anteaters in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Friday at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

Krsto Sbutega, Scott Swanson and Ben Hohl each recorded a hat trick for No. 3-ranked UCLA.

The Bruins (12-5, 4-2 in the MPSF) never trailed against the visiting Anteaters (9-10, 0-4 MPSF), outscoring UCI in each quarter.

UCLA led 8-6 at halftime, as UCI sophomore Brandon Johnson reduced the Bruins’ margin to two goals with a penalty shot at 1:12 in the second quarter.

Scott Davidson scored 57 seconds into the second half, handing UCLA a 9-6 lead. UCI received back-to-back goals from Enloe and Kruip to cut the Bruins’ advantage to 9-8.

UCLA used a 3-0 run, extending into the fourth quarter, to assume a 12-8 advantage.

WOMEN’S GOLF

LAKELAND, Fla. — UC Irvine senior Jane Chin finished in a tie for 25th at the Duramed FUTURES Tour’s Qualifying Tournament at Cleveland Heights Golf Course Friday.

Chin shot a final-round 75 and finished with a four-day total of 290 (73-66-76-75).

The 94 players making up the 54-hole cut will receive exempt or non-exempt status for the 2009 Duramed FUTURES Tour season. The number of exempt players will be determined following the final stage of LPGA Qualifying School early next month.

Chin, who is ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat rankings with a 69.92 scoring average, returns to action when the Anteaters participate in the Lady Aztec Invitational on Feb. 15-17 at Salt Creek Golf Course.

Anteater Shootout

IRVINE — The UC Irvine women went 1-4, while the UCI men were 0-3 in competition at the first day of the event Friday.

UCI will compete against Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Diego and Idaho today in Day 2, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
