SANTA BARBARA — Sophomore Simone Ibbotson scored 17 points to pace the Pirates in the Santa Barbara Tournament championship game Sunday at Santa Barbara City College.

Freshman Samantha Harrell added 10 points, as did sophomore Casey Gomez, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player.

Ibbotson and Harrell collected all-tournament recognition to help the Pirates improve to 3-0.

Antelope Valley dropped to 2-1.

Cal 87, Vanguard 37

BERKELEY — The visiting Lions made just 13 of 54 field-goal attempts (24.1%) in the exhibition game Sunday at Cal’s Haas Pavilion.

Vanguard, the reigning NAIA Division I champion, was outrebounded, 50-22, and missed all 18 of its three-point attempts.

Rachel Copeland scored nine for the visitors, who received eight points from Bridgette Reyes.

After Vanguard managed an 8-8 tie, Cal went on a 42-8 run to close the first half and take control.

Afghanistan 70

COSTA MESA — Junior Dennis Heenan had 20 points in 28 minutes to lead the Lions to the exhibition victory over the Afghanistan national team Monday night at The Pit.

Elvis Whitelow, a 6-foot-4 junior guard who transferred from College of the Sequoias, made all seven of his field-goal attempts, including four three-pointers to finish with 19 points. He also had 12 rebounds.

CJ Portz had 15 points and Mitch Boyce chipped in 10 for the Lions, who open their season Friday against Westminster of Utah in the Las Vegas Shootout.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 12, UC Irvine 9

MALIBU — After taking a 5-3 lead into the second quarter, the Anteaters were outscored, 4-0, in the period in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road game Sunday.

No. 9-ranked UCI (9-11, 0-5 in the MPSF) rallied to pull even a 9-9, but the No. 5-ranked hosts (17-6, 4-2) did the rest of the scoring.

Brett Auer, a junior out of Newport Harbor High, had a goal for the Waves.
