LONG BEACH — The host 49ers prevailed, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-13, Wednesday to keep the Anteaters from joining them atop the Big West Conference standings.

UCI (14-12, 9-4 in conference) saw its five-match winning streak snapped as the No. 25-ranked 49ers (22-4, 11-2) avenged a five-set loss to the Anteaters earlier this season.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Kellerman had a season-high 23 kills and added 18 digs for the visitors, who received a career-high 29 digs from sophomore Kari Pestolesi and 21 digs from senior Devon Sutherland.

Junior Taryn Robertson had 49 assists and 16 digs for UC Irvine.

Santa Ana

SANTA ANA — Freshman Briana Fields led the Pirates with nine kills in their 25-9, 25-13, 25-12 Orange Empire Conference sweep Wednesday night.

Freshman Rachel Freeno recorded eight kills, while sophomore setter Emily Lyon contributed 31 assists for Orange Coast (17-4, 9-4 in conference), which plays host to district rival Golden West Friday night at 7.

COSTA MESA — Freshman Martin Whitmore came off the bench to lead the Pirates with 14 points in their first win in nonconference action at OCC Wednesday night.

He knocked down two of his three three-pointers. Chad Delaney scored 13 points. He was he was three of four from three-point range, while Marcus Hairston hit all of four of his three-point shot attempts for 12 points. Chris Curtis, a reserve scored 10 points for OCC (1-2), which will play at Moorpark Wednesday at 5 p.m.

MEN’S GOLF

Turtle Bay Invitational

KAHUKU, Hawaii — The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished sixth in the event that concluded Wednesday at Turtle Bay Resort Golf Club.

Texas won the 19-team tournament with a 54-hole total of 21-under-par 843, including a 15-under score of 273 in the final round.

San Diego State was second at 846, UNLV and Texas-Arlington tied for third at 850, Ohio State was fifth at 852 and UCI placed sixth at 853, shooting a 10-under round of 278 Wednesday.

Vaughn Snyder of Ohio State was medalist with an 11-under total of 205, as he shot five-under 67 in the final round.

Anteater senior Sean Shahi finished sixth at six-under 210 after shooting one-under 71 Wednesday.

John Chin shot 68 in the last round to finish 25th at 214. Max Greil (73) was 49th at 219 and Cean Hayashi Geronimo (73) 51st at 220. Michael Im, who was disqualified in Tuesday’s second round, bounced back Wednesday with a six-under 66.

This was the final tournament of the fall for Coach Paul Smolinski’s Anteaters, who resume action Feb. 2-3 in the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate at Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson.
