REDLANDS — Junior goalie Jackson O’Connor came up big for the Mustangs in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs Wednesday.

O’Connor had 13 saves, including a one-on-none block early that set the stage, according to Mustangs Coach Justin Taylor, as well as a save as time was running out to preserve the victory.

“He was the man of the match,” Taylor said of O’Connor, who had three steals and one assist. “He seemed to make all the big blocks at the right time.”

Costa Mesa plays host to No. 3-seeded Murrieta Valley in Friday’s quarterfinals, at a site and time to be determined.

Senior Cody Serrano had five goals, while Taylor credited seniors Dustin Serrano and Garrett Frazier for leading a defensive effort that helped the visitors (19-10) post a 6-2 lead after three quarters.

The Wildcats scored three fourth-quarter goals to close to within 6-5 with 2:30 left, but O’Connor made two saves to stifle the comeback.

CORONA DEL MAR — Junior Max Bergeson finished with three goals, two steals and one assist in the Sea Kings’ CIF Southern Section Division I first-round playoff match Wednesday.

Michael Liao, Lucas Reynolds and Chase Watson each had two goals for CdM (18-9), which advanced to play at No. 3-seeded Los Alamitos (24-4) in the quarterfinals Friday.

LOS ANGELES — Senior Tucker Pettis scored five goals and added one assist and one steal in the Lightning’s CIF Southern Section Division III first-round playoff match Wednesday.

Sage Hill’s Michael Ljungh and Andrew Dorne each had one goal for top-seeded Montebello. The Lightning ended their season at 14-10.
