COMMUNITY COMMENTARY:

On Tuesday, we honored and celebrated veterans here in California and throughout the United States who have bravely served our country.

Our nation’s more than 23 million veterans deserve our commendation and respect for upholding the traditions and values that embody what it means to be an American.

We also must not forget those who valiantly served and sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

The recent passage of the Senate Republican sponsored Gold Star Family License Plate law, which allows families to honor U.S. Armed Service active duty members who died while serving their nation, reminds us that Veterans Day is also about the sacrifices made by families and loved ones.

Veterans and their families have sacrificed so much to preserve our way of life. For that reason, I will continue to support veterans’ benefits, ranging from education to health care. California’s veterans have always answered the call of duty and it is their selfless service that continues to inspire.

Veterans Day celebrations began in November 1919 when the Armistice was signed at the conclusion of World War I.

President Woodrow Wilson spoke these words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations… “What was first known as Armistice Day, and a celebration of those who served in World War I, was officially renamed Veterans Day in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The holiday now honors veterans who served in both times of war and peace.

Veterans Day is an opportunity to remember just how costly freedom really is. If you haven’t already this week, take the opportunity to thank your neighbors and friends who have answered the call to serve our communities, California and the United States.

I am proud of all of our California veterans and will continue to do whatever I can to show my appreciation for their selfless service.
