UC Irvine 55, UTEP 54 (OT)

EL PASO, Texas — Junior guard Keyonna Johnson made a free throw with six seconds left in overtime to propel the Anteaters to the road upset Sunday, giving Coach Molly Goodenbour her first win at the UCI helm.

A three-pointer by junior Mary Has (17 points) and a free throw by sophomore Rebecca Maessen (a career-high 22 points) gave UCI (1-1) a 54-50 lead to open the extra session.

UTEP (0-2) pulled even with 1:10 remaining, but turned the ball over with 33 seconds left. Johnson drove the lane, was fouled, and made the second of two foul shots for the win.

UTEP’s eight-footer bounced off the rim as time expired.

Maessen had eight rebounds, while Has chipped in six boards and three assists in 42 minutes.

Sophomore Kim Barnes had 12 rebounds for UCI, for which Johnson contributed six rebounds, three assists and three points.

IRVINE — The No. 4-ranked Golden Bears held off the No. 9 Anteaters in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation clash Sunday in the final home game of the season for UCI.

Griffin Lerman and Greg Enloe scored twice each and Matt Johnson had 11 saves for UCI (10-12, 1-6 in conference).
