A pair of Edison High runners earned runner-up finishes and Fountain Valley’s girls’ team took 12th place in its division Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Cross-Country Championships at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

Edison senior Hillary Hayes finished in second place in the Division II girls’ race with a time of 17 minutes 31 seconds. She placed second behind Saugus sophomore Kaylin Mahoney, who won the race in 17:01. Saugus also won the team title with 21 points.

Edison junior Matt McElroy ran a personal record time of 14:58 to earn a second-place finish in the boys’ Division II race, an event won by sophomore Elias Gedyon of Loyola, who won the race in 14:50. The two were the lone runners to break 15 minutes. Loyola was second in the division’s final team standings with 90 points. Thousand Oaks won the Division II title with a team points total of 73.

In girls’ Division I race, Fountain Valley finished with a team points total of 260 points. Senior Lauren Erickson (18:27) and sophomore Carmille Garcia (18:53) finished 20th and 41st, respectively, to lead the Barons. San Clemente senior Alex Dunn won the girls’ Division I race in 17:23, but Dana Hills ran away with the team title with a score of 46.

Basketball

The local prep teams begin their seasons next week.

In boys’ tournament play Monday, Fountain Valley opens at the Mission Viejo Classic, Huntington Beach at the Cypress/Western Classic and Marina at the La Quinta Tournament.

Edison and Ocean View both begin their respective seasons Dec. 4, the Chargers hosting San Clemente in nonleague play and the Seahawks at the San Luis Obispo Tournament.

In girls’ action, Edison plays Monday at the Century Tournament. In nonleague play Tuesday, Fountain Valley travels to face El Toro and Huntington Beach is at El Modena. On Thursday, Marina plays a nonleague game at Foothill and Ocean View begins play at the Lompoc Tournament.
