League record/finish: 6-3/second

2008 CIF results: Reached second round of Division V playoffs.

Program tidbits: Breakers beat Orange Coast League champion Costa Mesa by one point on their home floor and went on to win a first-round home CIF playoff game.

Returning starters: Emily Writer, Soph. G/F, second-team all-league; Sam Garner, Soph., C.

Other returner: Katy Daff, Sr., F.

Other Breakers:

Key losses: All league players Tess Grogan, Emily LaRose and Lauren Kelly.

Coach’s outlook: “We lost 3 key players to graduation but look to build on last year’s success,” Jon Hendrickson said. “The program is still in a rebuilding phase but we believe we have what it takes to compete for a league title this year and for many years to come.”

Season’s keys: “Commitment, heart and mental toughness. If each player on the team has all three, we can’t help but be successful.”

Season opener: Monday, 7 p.m., vs. Edison at Century Tournament.

BOYS

Staff: Jim Garvey (junior varsity); Joe Redford (freshmen)

League record/finish: 8-1/champions

Program tidbits: Breakers have won back-to-back league titles.

Returning starters: Ryan Lawler, Sr., G, first-team all-league; Dylan Roley, Sr., G., second-team all-league.

Other Breakers: Adam Selevan, Jr. G; Cody Duplisea, F, Sr.; Chris Taylor, F, Sr.; John Palfeyman, G, Sr.; Christian Kesler, Post, Sr.; Skylar Perkins, G, Sr.; Chris Paul, G, Soph.

Key losses: Three first-team all-league players in Marcus Hairston (MVP), Kevin Buck and Kenny Sullivan.

Coach’s outlook: “This year’s group works very hard, they’re smart and play great team basketball,” Fleming said. “I think we’ll be competitive with most teams.”

Season’s keys: “Our key this year will be to remain healthy. We really only have eight, nine kids on varsity, so we have very little depth.”
