Postseason continues for Corona del Mar

Corona del Mar High’s girls’ teams in volleyball and cross country will compete today in state competition.

The CdM girls’ volleyball team will play host to La Reina of Thousand Oaks at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the Southern California Regional. The Sea Kings (22-8) went to Scripps Ranch of San Diego and won in four games Tuesday to advance. La Reina won in four games at Garces Memorial of Bakersfield to advance.

Tonight’s winner advances to Tuesday’s Southern California Regional final, one win away from the state final, which would be at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center, Saturday at 5 p.m.

Redlands East Valley, the CIF Southern Section Division II champion that swept CdM in the title match, plays host to La Canada today in the other Southern California Regional semifinal.

The CdM girls’ cross country team will be vying for its sixth state championship today at 12:15 p.m. at Woodward Park in Fresno. A state title would tie a San Francisco school for the state record. The Sea Kings won their fifth straight CIF Southern Section Division II title last week.

The Newport Harbor girls will attempt to defend its CIF Division II crown today. The Sailors, who finished fourth last week at Mt. San Antonio College, will race at 10:05 a.m. Seniors Erica Pearson and Desiree Alexander lead the Tars.

The Sage Hill girls compete in Division V at 1:20 p.m. The Lightning finished fifth last week at the CIF Southern Section Championships.

Sage Hill junior Lion Wintemute will compete in Division V at 12:25 p.m. Wintemute, the lone boy from the Newport-Mesa area, finished 11th last week to qualify for the state meet.
