Hillary Hayes and Matt McElroy peaked at the right time of the year, allowing the two Edison High athletes to come up with outstanding performances Saturday at the 2008 CIF State Cross-Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Hayes, a senior, finished in second place the girls’ Division II run — and fifth overall among competitors in all divisions — with a time of 17 minutes 37 seconds. She knocked 20 seconds off last year’s time and the 17:37 for Hayes was the second-fastest mark in school history.

Sophomore Kaylin Mahoney of Saugus won the Division II race in 17:34. Senior Jordan Hasay of Mission Prep in the CIF Central Section, won the girls’ title with a time of 17:18.

In the boys’ Division II race, McElroy took fifth with a personal record time of 15:13. That time also earned the junior an overall finish of ninth among all runners from all divisions.

Loyola sophomore Elias Gedyon won both the boys’ Division II and overall titles with a time of 15:01.

“It was my peak race,” McElroy said. “My whole thing was to go all out and stay with the leaders, and I did that. I worked my butt off this entire year, and it paid off.”

Both Hayes and McElroy leave today for Portland, Ore., where they will compete Saturday at the NIKE Cross Nationals.
