BOYS’ SOCCER PREVIEW: Experience is key

The Laguna Beach High boys’ soccer team has opened up its 2008-09 campaign this week with a pair of tie matches in nonleague play.

The Breakers complete this week’s action today, hosting Mission Viejo at 7 p.m. at Guyer Field.

Here is a look at the 2008-09 Breakers:

Head coach: Patrick Coyne (3rd year)

Staff: Dan Richards, Austin Ezzell, Shervin Odabaee

2007-08 record: 12-6-4

League finish: Tied for second

Returning players: Bryce Healey, Sr., forward, first-team all-league, league offensive MVP; Noah Michelon, Sr., defender, first-team all-league; Caine Fair, Sr., defender, first-team all-league; Tommy Hopper, Sr., midfielder; Jack Monroe, Sr., defender; Ian Green, Jr., midfield, second-team all-league; Edgar Rabadan, Sr., midfielder; Tim Fulton, Sr., forward; John Snedegar, Sr., midfielder.

Coach’s outlook: “We have a good strong core of players who have played together for six-to-eight years in club and high school,” Patrick Coyne said. “They are all graduating together and have all been an important part to the high school program since freshman year. They are all confident in finishing with a successful season before they enter college. We are playing some top Division I schools, CIF champions and southern California’s elite in preseason, and the reason I scheduled them, is because I believe my boys have the potential to compete at the highest level. Talent, commitment and a bit of luck, I feel we can go very far in CIF.”

Schedule highlights: Mission Viejo (today); Santa Margarita (Dec. 10) and league play.

Team tidbits: The program’s alumni game will be played at noon on Jan. 3 at Guyer Field. A recreational camp for community youth ages four-to-13 will be held Dec. 22-24 (nine to noon daily) at the high school field.

Season opener: Played JSerra to a 2-2 tie Monday.
