BREAKERS ROUNDUP: Breakers teams off to nice starts

The Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team posted two big wins this week to launch its 2008-09 season, winning twice at the La Quinta Tournament in Westminster.

On Monday, the Breakers routed Pioneer of Whittier, 51-30. They came back Wednesday to dispose of former Pacific Coast League foe Northwood, 63-34.

In the win over Pioneer, Dylan Roley scored 19 points and Ryan Lawler had 13 points to lead Laguna.

In the 29-point triumph over Northwood, Roley poured in 32 points and Lawler scored 12.

Laguna resumes tournament play at 8 p.m. tonight against Katella. The tournament concludes Saturday with championship-round action.

The Breakers play their home opener at 7 p.m. Monday, hosting Calvary Chapel of Murrieta in nonleague play.

? Girls’ Basketball

Laguna fell behind early Monday against University and went on to suffer a 59-18 home loss. Emily Writer led the Breakers with 11 points.

Launa begins play Monday at the Fountain Valley Tournament.

? Girls’ Soccer

The Breakers opened their season Wednesday at San Juan Hills and played the Stallions to a scoreless tie.

The Breakers play Saturday at the Ocean View Holiday Tournament and then host University in a 6:15 p.m. nonleague match Tuesday.

? Boys’ Soccer

Laguna began the season this week and played to a pair of tie scores.

On Monday, the Breakers and visiting JSerra fought to a 2-2 tie. On Wednesday, Laguna and visiting Mater Dei ended in a 1-1 tie at Guyer Field.

Bryce Healey scored off a Caine Fair assist in the Mater Dei match as the BreakerS overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit. Fair sent a long throw-in from the right side to Healy, who lunged high in the air to slam in the tying goal in the first four minutes of the second half.

“Our team has really jelled well,” Laguna Coach Patrick Coyne said. “We played well in these two games and we dominated the second half against Mater Dei. I’m getting a really good vibe from this team.”

The Breakers host Mission Viejo at 7 p.m. today at Guyer Field. Prior to the start of the varsity match “” and following the 4:45 p.m. junior varsity match “” fourth- and fifth-grade students from El Morro School and Top of the World will compete against each other in a 6 p.m. match at Guyer Field.
