The Newport Mesa Breakers, a girls under 10 select team representing AYSO Region 97, captured the gold medal in the Area Q Select championships at the Farm Complex in Costa Mesa. The Breakers were the number one seed for the tournament after completing the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record. Victories over South Irvine and Corona del Mar put the Breakers into the final against Tustin. Siena Ward, Yaritza Garcia, Kiana Ghamari and McKenzie Porteous scored for the Breakers in a 4-0 victory. Destry Comp went the distance in the goal registering her fifth shutout of the season. The stingy defense was led by Faith Harper, Jackie Singer, Grace Vandervot, Paige Fults and Zoe Conley.

Undefeated and untied in Area Q play, the Breakers entered the prestigious Cerritos Thanksgiving Invitational to see how they would fare again LA County competition. Pool play victories against Los Alamitos (5-3), Arcadia (7-2) and Covina (7-2) vaulted the Breakers into the quarterfinals of the three day tournament. In the quarters, the Breakers squared off with Whittier who had advanced from their pool with a stingy defense. Ward, Garcia and Harper scored for the Breakers who came away with an easy 5-0 win. In the semi-final the Breakers faced their toughest challenge to date against the host team from Cerritos. Cerritos was big, fast and aggressive and defended the Breaker attack over and over. Despite getting 10 shots on goal, the Breakers were denied the back of the net and the first half ended 0-0. The third quarter was similar to the first half with the Breakers possession style passing around the physical Cerritos defense. Garcia penetrated down the right side off a pass from Ward and sent in a perfect cross which Brynn Blowers one timed into the back of the net. The goal proved to be the difference and moved the Breakers into the finals with a 1-0 victory. Comp and Hillary Beall shared time in goal to record the shut-out. In the final the Breakers faced a tough Los Alamitos team seeking revenge for their first loss of the season against the Breakers in pool play. However just too much for Los Alamitos, Garcia, Ward, Harper and company, the Breakers breezed to a 5-0 victory for the gold. Coach Kirk McIntosh credited his controlling defense led by Harper, Vandervort and Singer as the key to the lop-sided win.
