Paul Anthony Cuomo

Paul Anthony Cuomo, long time

Newport Beach resident, loving

husband, and devoted father,

passed away on December 2,

2008. Thanks to the compassionate

and caring staff at Hoag

Hospital, Paul passed peacefully

with his family at his side. In August,

Paul was diagnosed with an

in operable brain tumor. Through

the months of September and October,

he underwent both Radiation

and Chemo therapies, which

had a tremendously positive effect

on the tumor. Unfortunately,

his immune system was decimated by the treatments, and a fungal

pneumonia was his eventual undoing.

Paul was born on March 23, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York. He is

survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Peggy, by his two sons,

Tom and Tony, by their wives Janessa and Rachelle, and by his four

grandchildren, Julian, Elena, Zoe, and Cole. In his youth Paul was

a devoted Brooklyn Dodger fan. In the late fifties he followed his

team to Los Angeles and eventually settled in Newport Beach in

1964. In spite of his team’s defection Paul loved to travel back to

his native New York to take in the theater in Manhattan and visit

family & friends. He was an avid pool player, where is skills earned

him the nick name of ‘Paulie Fats.’ Paul played a wicked and deadly

game of nine-ball. He loved music of all types and had a wonderful

singing voice. The Platters, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, James Taylor,

Bobby Darrin, Rock Star Barbeque, and his grandson Cole comprise

a very small portion of his many favorites.

Paul will be remembered fondly for two very important reasons.

Even though his profession was Land Surveying, Paul will be

remembered as a friend, educator, and mentor to the many men

and women who came in contact with him. Starting in the mid

1970’s, Paul developed a passion and devotion to the advancement

of land surveying education that lasted four decades. Through his

many classes, seminars, and workshops throughout the country,

Paul shaped the careers of literally thousands of individuals. It is

because of this extraordinary commitment that two separate memorial

funds have been set up. In lieu of flowers, please forward your

donations to the ‘Paul Cuomo Memorial Scholarship Fund’, 2832

Tigertail Drive, Rossmoor, CA. 90720.

More important than his commitment to his chosen profession,

however, was his commitment to his family. Despite the fact that

his own father passed away when Paul was only three, Paul was

100% a family man. Cub Scouts, Webelows, Boy Scouts, Indian

Guides, the P.T.A., baseball coach, The Cukoo’s Nest – you name

it, if his sons were involved in it, Paul was there to lend a hand.

Paul was first and foremost a tremendously devoted father, involved

with any endeavor his sons ventured into.

A memorial celebration is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, January

17th. Please visit paulcuomo.com for details as they become

available.
