CdM’s Bergeson named league’s player of year

Corona del Mar High junior Max Bergeson was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Year after leading the boys’ water polo team to the league championship, the program’s 10th straight PCL title.

For the second straight season, Bergeson made the team after leading the Sea Kings (20-12, 4-0 in league) in scoring with 81 goals and 53 assists. The lefty scored on five penalty shots and also had 48 steals.

Seniors Brian Schiefer, Lucas Reynolds and Carter Taylor received first-team honors for CdM, which beat Back Bay rival Newport Harbor for the first time under Barry O’Dea’s four years as the head coach.

The Sea Kings reached the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal for the third straight year.

Schiefer led the team with 60 steals and he had 44 goals. He recorded four goals and two steals in CdM’s 10-8 upset of Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay.

Reynolds, a repeat first-team pick, ranked second on the team with 51 goals. He had 18 steals and 12 assists.

Taylor, a repeat first-team pick, was second in steals with 52. He added 32 goals and 40 assists.

Players getting second-team recognition were junior Michael Liao and senior Nick Klein.
