UP AND COMING:
The Corona del Mar High boys’ junior varsity team won its second straight tournament title after beating Back Bay rival Newport Harbor, 55-41, in the championship game of the 16-team Bolsa Grande Tournament Saturday.
The Sea Kings used a trapping press defense to built a big first-half lead, and then withstood a second-run by the Sailors.
Corona del Mar, coached by Jason Simco, beat La Quinta, Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley en route to the title game. Newport Harbor surged past Servite in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
The week before winning the Bolsa Grande Tournament championship, the Sea Kings captured Troy High December Tournament. Corona del Mar dominated the tournament, beating each team by over 20 points a game.
Corona del Mar’s team includes: Kyle Bodovitz, Ty Neubauer, Dillon Campbell, Ryan Grable, Christian Sandoval, Winston Hollingshead, Sunny Dharod, Connor Gaal, Ron Ayzin, AJ Rading, Zach Morton, Matt Fisher and Jamie Heinecke

CdM freshman also win
The Corona del Mar High boys’ freshman basketball team won the Luis Macias Tournament at Santa Ana High Dec. 6.
The Sea Kings went 4-0 in the 12-team tournament. Corona del Mar beat JSerra, 76-21, and Santa Ana, 78-36, in pool play. The Sea Kings also took El Dorado, 62-53 in the semifinals
In the championship game, Corona del Mar, coached by Daniel Lim, held a lead against El Modena the entire game and finished with a 53-42 victory.
CdM’s freshman team includes: Matt English, Zac Davis, Brady Quon, Matt Livingston, Andrew McCormack, Evan Beaufort, Justin Ruffalo, Cort Hastings, Tanner Quon, Cole Cottrell, Kyle Sherburne, Billy Macdonald, Joe Ctvrtlik and Timmy Root.
