“I was extremely proud of the entire team as all 14 players contributed during the tournament. We are getting better every game, so I am very pleased with the progress we are making as a team.â€
Marina: In the first round of the Beckman Tournament Tuesday, the Vikings turned away defending CIF Division IVA champion Valley Christian of Cerritos, 84-71. For the second straight game, Marina got off to a hot start, this time, hitting five three-point baskets to charge to a 30-11 lead after the first quarter.
“Valley Christian is a good team and hung tough but we did enough to keep them from getting closer than 10 the rest of the way,†Marina Coach Roger Holmes said. “We are playing with good energy for most of the games but will need to sustain that high level more consistently as the year moves forward.â€
In previous action, the Vikings ventured Saturday up to North Hills to take on Monroe of the L.A. City Section. Marina rode a 33-point first quarter explosion to an eventual 99-81 nonleague victory. Brendan Holmes had a game high 30 points and Garrett James scored 25 for the Vikings.
“Our team defense continued to lead us,†Roger Holmes said. “We controlled the tempo and created several turnovers that led to easy baskets.â€
Edison: The Chargers went 2-2 at the La Quinta Tournament, falling to University (69-58) and Westminster (42-39) before closing the tourney with wins over Loma Linda Academy (60-38) and Brentwood (60-34).
Chargers Coach Rich Boyce said the “good news†in the past week came in the form of the return to the lineup of junior 6-foot-5 center Jordan Zumwalt and 6-3 junior forward Jeff Trojan, both of whom had been injured. Zumwalt made his presence known by collecting 10 rebounds in each of the wins and Trojan scored seven points Saturday against Brentwood.
Sophomore guard Dylan Garrity scored 28 points in both the Loma Linda and Brentwood games.
“Overall, we played well considering we suited up six varsity players for most of the tourney,†Boyce said.
The Chargers didn’t have leading scorer Kyle Boswell or junior forward/center Ryan Smith at the tournament due to injury. Boyce said that both “should be†back in action this week. Edison left Tuesday for Maui and is competing at the Maui Winter Classic at the Lahaina Civic Center through Monday.
Marina will play Dana Hills at 5:30 p.m. Monday as part of the North-South Challenge.
Ocean View: On the final day of competition of the week-long Tournament of Champions at Ocean View High Saturday, Etiwanda pulled away in the second half to defeat host Ocean View, 67-45. Jones and Johnson represented Ocean View on the all-tournament team.
In the tournament, Ocean View defeated Centennial of Compton, Long Beach Poly and Pacific Hills.
Westchester won the 37th annual tournament, making it two-straight years that the Comets, led by this year’s tournament MVP Dominique O’Connor, have won the event.
“From top to bottom, it was an incredible tournament,†Ocean View co-head coach Jimmy Harris said of the 23-team tournament. “For us, we are slowly beginning to realize that we can’t just rely on our talent along. We showed that we can play with anybody but, like the other teams in that upper echelon, we need to work our butts off on defense. That’s what we’ll be working on this week at practice.â€
Ocean View next will take on Los Alamitos at 8 p.m. Tuesday in one matchup of the North-South Challenge at El Toro High.
