Oilers up to Challenge

Pulling off one of the early upsets in the girls’ prep basketball season, the Huntington Beach Oilers won the Hoops Challenge at Fountain Valley High on Saturday by upending Woodbridge, 56-40, in the tournament final.

Noelani Viloria scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds and went on to be named to the all-tournament team.

Teammate Meghan White hauled in 14 rebounds and shut down the Warriors’ inside game.

The win moved Huntington to 5-0 overall. The Oilers currently are in Phoenix playing at the NIKE Tournament of Champions..

“I am very proud of the girls as they are playing with great poise and confidence right now,” Huntington Coach Russell McClurg said. “Freshmen Maya Kennedy and Kelsey Minato both averaged about 11 points per game in the tournament. I know they are young but they both play with a lot of confidence.”

To reach the final, Huntington on Friday stopped El Modena, 63-52. Viloria led the way with 18 points and Minato and Kennedy scored 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Heading into the NIKE Tournament of Champions, the Oilers were averaging eight three-point baskets per game.

Marina: On Tuesday, Marina scored a 56-42 home court nonleague win over Aliso Niguel. Rita Sitivi’s 23 points led all scorers. Grace Boelsems and Jordyn Terukina each scored nine points for the Vikings.

Previously, Marina had dropped two games at the University Tournament in Irvine. First, the Vikings fell, 63-36, to San Clemente on Friday. Sitivi led Marina with 15 points. On Saturday, Mission Viejo pulled away in the second half to claim a 70-59 victory. Sitivi had 25 points and Grace Boelsems scored 13.

In another nonleague outing, Marina defeated Beckman, 56-32. Sitivi had 12 points and Boelsems 11.

The Vikings are in Phoenix, competing at the NIKE Tournament of Champions.

Ocean View: Last week, the Seahawks went 1-2 at the Bryan Ayer Classic hosted by Lompoc High. The win was over Santa Ynez, 38-35.

The Seahawks continue play this week through Saturday at their own Ocean View Tournament. On Monday, they begin play at the Whittier Christian Tournament.

Edison: The Chargers scored a 61-35 victory at Mission Viejo on Dec. 10. Bonnie Samuelson scored 18 points to lead three Edison players in double figures.

Kelly Peterson and Christina Marquette scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Fountain Valley: In their own tournament last Saturday, the host Barons dropped a 54-53 decision to Schurr of Montebello when the Spartans hit a last-second shot on the final day of competition at the Hoops Challenge.

Sami Little scored 15 points to lead the Barons who continue play this week at the Ocean View Tournament.

Fountain Valley had picked up its first win of the season on Dec. 10 when the Barons romped past Loara, 53-19. Helena Robel scored 12 points and Shirley Sharif 10 for the Barons.
