Rain wreaked havoc in prep soccer circles this week, causing cancellations and rescheduling of tournament games and nonleague action.

On Monday, both the Laguna Beach boys’ and girls’ soccer teams had tournament matches rained out. For the boys, Laguna was supposed to finish up play at the Chino Hills Tournament at Ayala Park, and the girls’ squad was to complete play at the Ocean View Holiday Classic.

Boys’ Coach Patrick Coyne said that Monday’s tournament game was to be rescheduled for a later date. He also said that Wednesday’s home nonleague match against Tesoro was canceled due to flooding at Guyer Field. The Laguna girls’ team had its game against Long Beach Poly moved to Wednesday.

Playing in what Coach Bill Rolfing called a “frigid monsoon” Wednesday at Ocean View High, Laguna suffered its first loss of the season when the Breakers dropped the third-place game of the Ocean View Holiday Classic to Long Beach Poly, 2-0.

“We played well enough to get a draw, missed three good, open nets while slipping in the mud,” said Rolfing, who noted that three Laguna starters sat out the match “still recovering” from a physical match Tuesday against Pacifica.

Laguna advanced to the final four of the 20-team event and Rolfing said the Breakers were just one goal shy from reaching the championship game.

In the tournament, Laguna blanked both Saddleback (4-0) and Oxford Academy of Cypress (1-0) and played Tustin to a scoreless tie.

The result from the Tustin match allowed the Breakers to win their bracket, Rolfing said. It was Laguna’s first appearance at the tournament.

The Breakers stepped out of tournament play Tuesday to host Pacifica in a nonleague match. The Breakers and Mariners played to a scoreless tie. Laguna goalie Lura Hill had six saves.

Today, the Breakers host Ocean View in a 4:45 p.m. nonleague match.

“We played pretty well in those three games,” Coach Patrick Coyne said.

Today, Laguna travels to San Clemente for a 6 p.m. nonleague match against the Tritons.
