EDITORIAL:
Last week, we declared in a headline “Blame it on the rain” when Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade officials scotched the first day of the centennial promenade. But, technically, we should have blamed it on the wind (we hope you forgive the poetic license).
Howling gusts led to a small craft advisory from the National Weather Service, making it impossible for Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce officials to avoid docking the parade for at least one day.
And while the one-day delay might have been as disappointing as, say, a Milli Vanilli album, the anticipation made the comeback that much sweeter.
And though the sinking economy could have dampened everyone’s mood, it appeared the George Bailey-esque spirit we love so much in Newport-Mesa was in full effect with Gay Wassall-Kelly dressed like a Christmas tree and Mary and Carl Raymond’s penguin-power decorations snagging the annual Ring of Lights Sweepstakes award for the third consecutive year.
“It’s amazing. More people are staying in town for the holidays and are looking for things to do for free,” Mary Raymond said, referring to budget-conscious locals. “We’re so fortunate to be in Newport and have these things that we can enjoy.”
Amen. Times are tough, but there’s nothing like a party to lift your spirits — especially when there’s no rain on your parade.
