HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:

NEWPORT COAST — There wasn’t a specific play drawn up for Sage Hill School’s winning basket, but Tierney Danner and Hannah Jeffrey sure made the game’s final points seem as if it came from the perfect call.

Danner, the Lightning’s senior forward, scored on a layup with three seconds left that lifted the Sage Hill girls’ basketball team to a 43-42 win against visiting Estancia Tuesday night.

Sage Hill Coach Lou Silverman said Danner cut to the basket and Jeffrey found her shortly after the Lightning had inbounded the ball. Danner made a layup with three seconds left and was fouled. She missed the free throw and Estancia could not get a shot off in time.

Danner scored a game-high 20 points. She also had eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks for Sage Hill (6-3). Lightning senior Stephanie Garrison had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Silverman said the Lightning were able to win thanks to the contributions from reserves Hana Hunt, a junior, and Sarah Derheim, a sophomore. Senior Morgan Hembarsky and Garrison stepped up to help with ball handling and passing, Silverman said.

“We got contributions from the people we needed to get contributions from,” Silverman said. “[Jeffrey] caught Tierney on a great cut ... It wasn’t anything we drew up. [Danner] had the presence to cut to the hoop and finished like she always does.”

Sophomore Yesenia Maldonado led the Eagles (8-4) with 15 points, while sophomore Kassie Stratton added 14 points. Estancia was without Erika Soto and Brenda Soto, who were on a family trip, co-coach Xavier Castellano said.
