Boys’ eighth grade

Newport-Mesa Lightning 49, Mission Viejo Spartans 46: The keys to the offense were the six three-point baskets by Chris Okey, Kris Picarelli and James Newman, as well as a strong inside game from Andy Doka and Troy Reese.

Newman led the team in scoring with 16 points, followed by Picarelli and Doka each with 10 points and Okey and Reese finished up with seven and six points, respectively.

On the defensive end, Picarelli, Doka and Reese crashed the boards for a combined 16 rebounds and Okey blocked two shots.

Seventh and eighth grade

Hornets 41, Clippers 40

Kari Sakraney proved to be the Hornets’ hero, hitting the game-winning three-pointer as time expired.

The game went back and forth through each period with several lead changes before Sakraney hit the three-pointer for the win. The Hornets improved to 2-0 on the season with a close-shave win.

Sakraney finished with 12 points, four assists and four steals. Gannon Bond, Timmy Strader, Quinn Bassler, Garrett Post, Micah Cox, Kevin Moattari and Kaveh Anderson all played well in the big win.

Paul MacCabe played well again for the Clippers, who competed with only five players throughout. He finished with a game-high 22 points, 12 rebounds and six steals while Steven Barela, Kyle Morris and Armen Shrikian all played tough defense against the Hornets.

Wizards 28, Pistons 24: The Wizards also remained undefeated with a tough victory over the Pistons. Reid Chase had his best game of the season with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Ricky Nadal chipped in eight rebounds and four steals. Shane Silver added seven points while Clay Woodward and David Bruno provided stout interior defense. The Pistons were led by the strong play of Alex Wilde.

Lakers 41, Celtics 24: The Lakers improved to 1-1 on the season with a big win over the Celtics.
