Friends of the Library give out sizable donation

The Newport Beach Friends of the Library recently donated $43,050 to the library.

“We are happy to be able to continue our support of the library,” said Susan Hirsch, vice president of the Friends of the Library. “Despite the poor economy, business at the Friends’ book store is rolling along. We sell over 1,000 books a day.”

The money will be used to offset costs of the library’s Summer Reading Program, Literacy Services, school visits to the library, outreach to middle and high school students, and other programs like the Sunday Musicales and family concerts. The money will also be spent on new books and DVDs for the children’s collection.

“We are very grateful to the Friends of the Library for all that they do to support the library,” said Library Director Cynthia Pirtle. “Without their support we could not provide the high-caliber of programs and services that have made us one of the top-ranked libraries in the state.”
