Sage Hill 53, Godinez 51

AVALON — Senior Morgan Hembarsky hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds to help lead the Lightning to the victory in the championship game of the Avalon Tournament Wednesday.

Senior Tierney Danner made one of two free throws with seven seconds left for the 53-51 and held off Godinez. Hembarsky led Sage Hill (9-4) with 15 points and five assists, while Danner finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Stephanie Garrison, who had eight rebounds and six points, was named the tournament MVP and junior Hannah Jeffrey earned all-tournament honors. Freshman Ava Soleimany contributed six assists for the Lightning.

“Throughout the tournament, [Garrison] was our catalyst on both ends of the court,” Sage Hill Coach Lou Silverman said. “She shut down some of the key players from the opposition. She did a great job on the boards and on offense, she took the ball to the hoop and got to the free-throw line. She was phenomenal in the three games of the tournament.”

The Lightning play host to Fairmont Prep Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

TEMECULA — Mikey Molina led the Mustangs with 18 points in the third-place game of the Linfield Christian Caged Classic Wednesday.

Ben Lefebvre added 17 points for the Mustangs (5-7), who trailed by 15 entering the fourth period. Molina and Lefebvre were both named all-tournament.

Costa Mesa lost to Army-Navy Academy, 57-55, in the semifinals Tuesday when Molina led the Mustangs with 24 points.

Molina and Lefebvre earned all-tournament honors in the eight-team competition.

Costa Mesa plays host to Laguna Hills Saturday at 7 p.m.
