CdM’s 10th straight PCL title feaures plenty honors

The Corona del Mar High girls’ tennis team, which captured its 10th straight Pacific Coast League championship, had its nine starters earn all-league honors with seven receiving first-team recognition.

Melissa Matsuoka, Danielle Kaiden, Lindsay Zotovich, Karen Ishii, Kelli Feeley, Katelyn Nguyen and Paige Polizois earned first-team all-league honors, as they helped the Sea Kings finish undefeated in league at 8-0.

Matsuoka, a junior who reached the title match of the PCL finals in singles, finished 19-3 in singles and 12-0 in doubles for the Sea Kings. She reached the Round of 16 at the CIF individuals.

Kaiden and Zotovich were usually paired during the season. The senior duo helped the Sea Kings finish 19-1 on the season. CdM suffered its only loss of the year in the championship match of the CIF Southern Section Division I final, losing to Dana Hills, 13-5.

Kaiden, who will play at Cal Poly Pomona next year, finished 53-3 in doubles this past season, while Zotovich was also 53-3.

Ishii, a senior, was 49-2 in doubles.

Feeley, a junior, finished 51-4 in doubles and 3-0 in singles. Ishii and Feeley won the PCL doubles title, beating their teammates Kaiden and Zotovich in the league final.

Nguyen, a freshman, was 18-19 in singles and 9-2 in doubles. She played No. 1 singles, mainly while Matsuoka was out with a wrist injury early in the season.

Polizois, a senior, was 11-11 in singles and 15-5 in doubles.

Senior Rebecca Beyer and junior Azadeh Nazemi earned second-team all-league honors.

Beyer went 35-7 in doubles and 5-3 in singles, while Nazemi was 27-5 in doubles and 12-6 in singles.

The Sea Kings have 20 league titles overall. They were seeking their ninth CIF Southern Section title and their first championship since 2006, when CdM finished the year 24-0.

This past season, was the second straight year the Sea Kings reached the CIF Division title match, losing both to Dana Hills.

Coach Brian Ricker completed his fifth season with Corona del Mar, and has compiled a 101-12 record during that time.

Megan Heneghan of Beckman was named the Pacific Coast League’s MVP. She beat Matsuoka in the PCL singles title match.
